In the design sector the Leica SL2-S looks similar to the Leica SL2. The camera carries a full metal body design with aluminum and magnesium materials coated in black leather. Overall the body design is also splash resistant with an IP54 rating.
The Leica SL2-S comes with a full frame BSI sensor with a resolution of 24.6 megapixels. According to Leica, the SL2-S was its first mirrorless to use ASI sensors. The sensor is also supported by the performance of the Leica Maestro III processor.
As a mirrorless camera focused on the videography sector, the Leica SL2-S is capable of recording video at 10 bit 4K 30p resolution in no time limit. Videos can also be recorded directly to an SD memory card or there is also the option to record to an external recorder. Leica SL2-S also supports 4K/60p 10bit 4:2:2 video recording via the HDMI Out port. It's just that in this 4K/60p video recording mode the video will crop. The limitations are similar to the mirrorless Panasonic S1 which also carries an L-mount.
Meanwhile, for fast shooting the Leica SL2-S is capable of shooting non-stop at a speed of 25 fps. Supported by a 4GB buffer, this means that when shooting non-stop in JPEG format it will barely feel buffered or time waiting for images to be saved to the memory card. In fact, the camera is capable of directly shooting up to 999 photos in DNG format to a UHS-II memory card without degrading its performance.
For other features, the Leica SL2-S features a direct 5-axis stabilizer, supports shooting capability up to 96 megapixel resolution, and is compatible with all Leica lenses using additional lens adapters. Like other Leica cameras the selling price of this camera is also not cheap. The Leica SL2-S sold for US$4895.
